5 Tips to Help the Seniors You Love Stay Warm For the Winter 2019

This winter has possibly left you exhausted from guessing how to dress and prepare for the days’ weather. From strong winds to loads of rain to a polar vortex to unusually warm days…we’ve seen just about everything (except the fluffy white stuff!). But we Georgians know that, no matter how nice a few days at the beginning of February may feel, winter isn’t over yet and there’s more cold in store for us. The low temps can be tough for all of us, but our elderly friends and family are more prone to have difficulty regulating internal body temperatures and are more at risk of suffering real medical emergencies due to the falling temps. Here are a few tips to help the seniors you love stay safe and comfortable as we face these next couple of months

  1. Keep it above 68 degrees! Make sure that thermostat doesn’t drop below 68! You may be tempted to try and save money on the electric bill, but keeping warm indoors is of utmost importance on those really cold days. It’s always safer to depend more on the thermostat and less on space heaters because they can really pose a safety risk if accidentally placed too close to furniture, blankets, etc. So consider a slightly higher electric bill an investment in a senior’s health and safety…well worth it!
  2. Keep those hands and feet covered! Many seniors suffer from poor circulation in their extremities. Add to that that our bodies’ natural reaction to cold is to restrict circulation to our hands and feet, and seniors can be left feeling ice cold. So make sure they’re stocked up with some cozy, thick socks and warm gloves! They’ll be great to stay comfy inside and absolutely necessary when venturing outside in cold weather. 
  3. Wear layers! It’s always better to take off a jacket than to wish you were more bundled up!
  4. Get some exercise! Whatever movement is safe and comfortable will contribute to better circulation and good old body heat. Encourage your senior to take a lap around their home, do some arm circles, or even “march” while sitting. 
  5. Possibly our favorite suggestion??? Eat some yummy, warm, comfort foods!! Chili, soup, stew…perfect ways to warm up from the inside out!
